When Does the Conman Become the Antihero

The Wolf of Wall Street movie trailer depicts the
office midget throwing- standard obnoxiousness
I first watched the trailer for Martin Scorcese’s biographical film “The Wolf of Wall Street “ about a month ago. This was the first time I’d ever heard of Jordan Belfort but right of the bat I wanted to know more. Was this midget throwing true? Is the movie another victim of Hollywood exaggeration? I googled Jordan Belfort and absorbed all the information I could find about his business ideas growing up and his ambition to make money and to be successful. His absolute focus to succeed pushing everything else to the side is admirable I initially thought. In ways I’d look at myself as a man cut from the same cloth. The wealthy stockbroker made hundreds of millions operating boiler rooms in pump and dump share schemes and lived the high life including drug and alcohol abuse. Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll was now sex, drugs and shares.

So these were my initial thoughts. I continued to surf the web in search of more of his quotes and looked for further information of him online. I then got on with the rest of my life and any thoughts I had on the man and movie were put to the back of my head ready to resurface in December as the movie nears closer. However yesterday I stumbled across a news article reporting the conviction of three conmen who scammed over 2,300 Britons in a similar ‘Boiler room’ scam and tragically one of the victims committed suicide. You can’t not hate these three men and 99% of us are happy they have been jailed.

However if this story was picked up by Hollywood, given a bit of glamour and razzmatazz would we all of a sudden look  at these 3 men as something else.

Over time there has been a number of ruthless, conniving and destructive people portrayed as something they’re not
by Hollywood. The legacy that lives on isn’t one of hatred but of admiration. This is an insult to the families of their victims and all of those affected by their actions.

I have been guilty of this myself and it’s only when I break it down and look at those affected that I realise. I’ve now assessed my view to an admiration of certain qualities but total disdain for the person.  I can admire Hitler’s natural leadership and immense ability at rallying supporters but I hold total hatred for him and his actions.

American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington, chronicled the life of the notorious drug dealer, Frank Lucas.  This has always been one of my favourite biopics. Lucas whilst ruthless and cold is a man of many commendable virtues. Cutting out the middleman and going straight to the source is an example of Lucas’ innovative ways. He was business savvy and certainly carried a presence. Federal judge Sterling Johnson, who was special narcotics prosecutor in New York at the time of Lucas' crimes, called Lucas' operation
American Gangster movie poster
"one of the most outrageous international dope-smuggling gangs ever, an innovator who got his own connections outside the U.S. and then sold the narcotics himself in the street."
Even the judge here notes his innovation. The strong qualities put forward. He had ethics and principals. He wouldn’t wear the flash clothes to keep his head low. He hired only family members so he could trust his employees.  Richie Roberts who prosecuted Frank Lucas has since came out criticizing the movie for portraying Frank Lucas as almost ‘noble’. However the real life Lucas was illiterate and vicious. He was everything the fictional Frank Lucas wasn’t.

You find yourself watching this movie hoping for Frank, you are up for him rather than the justice system. People will refer to Lucas as a smooth operator and a great businessman, which is true, but he is essentially a vicious, violent and ruthless murderer who ruined the lives of so many.

In an interview, Lucas said,
"I wanted to be rich. I wanted to be Donald Trump rich, and so help me God, I made it.’
This is very similar to Jordan Belfort who when talking about getting rich quoted this gem
“I believe in total immersion, if you want to be rich, you have to program your mind to be rich. You have to unlearn all the thoughts that were making you poor and replace them with new thoughts – rich thoughts.”
Belfort took home $50 million a year
The underlying thoughts here are very similar and I can take motivation from these quotes. I admire these aspects but it’s important when watching these movies we also open our eyes outside the fiction and look at the reality of their actions.

So what I want to know is if three men who scammed up to 85million from 2,300 Britons, leaving so many broke and one dead as a result and wiping out family’s life savings, could Hollywood do a job on them, glorify their story and somehow leave these disgusting selfish men a positive lasting legacy,

Con men are charming and through the media of film the audience spends 2 hours being wooed and charmed by the glorified script of their lives. By turning these conmen into ‘antiheros’ is Hollywood belittling those affected by the crime in question and are they distorting the legitimacy of history. Where is the line drawn where someone cannot be turned into an antihero? How do the families of the victims feel when they watch these grotesque biopics? Will people from my generation refer to these characters as an inspiration not realising they are therefore referring to selfish criminals?

Transfer Predictions-Part 1

Transfer Predictions - Part I

Arsenal

Budget£70million

What's been said and done:

So far Arsenal have been all talk and very little action. They have brought in Wenger's token French summer signing, Yaya Sanogo who does possess raw talent. He is a mixture of strength and electric quickness. He possesses a lot of characteristics similiar to Giroud, Henry and Benteke. Whilst a promising prospect he does not significantly strengthen what they already have and he has been dogged with injury over the last 2 years. Arsenal have strangely made it public knowledge that they have a war chest this summer after prudently balancing the books as a result of their fantastic new ground. This knowledge has placed an expectancy among the Arsenal faithful. They expect signings and big signings at that. So far Arsenal have been a lot of talk and very little action.

What they need:

After getting on their knees and dragging themselves just over the 'Top Four' line it is time for Arsenal to pay back their fan's loyalty by winning a trophy. For Arsenal to have a go this year they need to keep hold of their prized assets. Big name players linked with a move away include Santi, Sagna and Kolsienly. Of those names no one would be too upset to see Sagna leave but it is very important he is replaced for squad strength. Arsenal need to sign a back up goalkeeper, midfielder, wide man and a world class striker I feel to push onto the next level. If there is any money left in the bank a move for Sakho is a must. Bids have been placed for Higuain and Suarez and there is still a possibility of these transfers although the latter looks considerably more likely. In midfield Arsenal need a deep lying player to partner Wilshere and Santi Cazorla with Arteta, Rosicky and Ramsey adding strength in depth.

Who are they linked with?

Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Marouane Fellaini (Everton), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), Julio Cesar (QPR), Etienne Capoue (Toulouse), Lars Bender (Bayer Leverkusen), Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund), Lorenzo Melgarejo (Benfica), Odil Akhmedov (Anzhi), Gilbert Imbula (Guingamp), Asier Illarramendi (Real Sociedad), Dimitri Payet (Lille), Tin Jedvaj (Dynamo Zagreb), Ashley Williams (Swansea), Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Schalke), Connor Hunte (Chelsea), Clement Grenier (Lyon), Serge Aurier (Toulouse), Maxime Gonalons (Lyon), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Geoffrey Kondogbia (Sevilla), Tim Krul (Newcastle), Luis Suarez (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Salvio (Benfica).Sakho (PSG)Bernard(Ath.Mineiro)

What they'll end up with :

After all is said and done, a lot more will have been said than done I reckon. As I write this Higuain conducts his medical at Napoli so let's consider that deal complete, Arsenal were outpriced. Suarez is in talks with Arsenal via a clause in his contract but Liverpool have rejected the 40,000,001 pound bid. I see Suarez signing for 45 million doubling Liverpools investment and getting a strike who is a lot of trouble off their books representing very good business for the Merseyside club. I think the ever impressive Bernard will join and give Arsenal great options on the flanks.  I expect Arsenal to somehow manage to clear out the dead wood of Gervinho (Roma) , Chamack and Bendtner (anyone who will take them) . An August move for Fellaini to be foiled by Moyes' United although this depends on Man United's own midfield hunt. Instead they will settle for a 4 million Gareth Barry which isn't the terrible signing Arsenal fans would have you believe. I would be surprised to not see Ashley Williams in an Arsenal jersey come September although at 12 million there is much better value in Sakho from PSG who would be more expensive but is a far superior player who also offers cover as a left back.

Predicted Starting VI

Schezney, Jenkinson, Williams, Kolsliencly, Gibbs, Wilshere, Barry, Santi , Walcott, Bernard, Suarez.

Aston Villa

Budget: £6 – £10 Million

What's been said and done:

Was no one willing to pay 25million?
Arguably Villa and Lambert's biggest achievement of this transfer window is convincing Benteke to withdraw his transfer request and sign on for another four years with no minimum fee release clause!  They have been busy bringing in a couple of young internationals keeping with their shrewd transfer policy. Spending 6.5 million on young internationals Okore(aggresive defender with great pace and strength) and Tonev. Of the 6 players Villa have brought in, Tonev at 23 is the oldest, there is a clear emphasis on young talent from Europe here and there is a lot of potential in the transfer business they have so far conducted. They have gone about their business quitely so far and very effectiveley.

What they need:

Villa have been quite active now and have added a lot of strength and depth. If there is anywhere else they need to look at perhaps another central midfielder or centre back would be ideal. However unless signifcant money is spent there is very little left to do for Aston Villa. Should Darren Bent leave the club they might add an extra striker onto the books.

Who are they linked with?

Elliott Bennett (Norwich), Stephane Mbia (QPR), Gareth Barry (Man City), Abdoulaye Ba (Porto), Hiroshi Kiyotake (Nuremberg), Demba Ba (Chelsea)

What they'll end up with :

Darren Bent will leave making this very much Lambert's team. Very few players that Lambert inherited have remained in the team and after a year we are very much seeing his blueprints.. I think what they have now is very much what they will start the season with, I can't see many more comings and goings except for Bent as Lambert looks to mould his squad into a mid table team with a strong backbone of Guzan-Vlaar-Sylla-Benteke before adding to the squad next year and trying to push onto the next level.

Predicted Starting VI

Guzan-Lowton-Luna-Vlaar-Okore-N'Zogbia-Westwood-Sylla-Bacuna-Agbonlahor-Benteke

Cardiff City

Budget:  £  25 Million

What's been said and done:

Cardiff sure are ambitious and they've set out their stall by already breaking their transfer fee record by bringing in young Danish centre forward, Andreas Cornelius and word is they may break it again trying to bring in the impressive Etienne Capoue. They were snubbed earlier by Tom Ince after the clubs had agreed a fee. Of all the promoted clubs, Cardiff certainly have the biggest budget.

What they need:

They need squad depth and premier league experience and both must be quality. A central midfielder like Scott Parker would be ideal and could also contribute 5 goals a season as well as settling those around him. Bennett from Norwich should help out at that back but another defender or two wouldn't go amiss.

Who are they linked with?

: Carlton Cole (unattached), Albert Adomah (Bristol City), Salomon Kalou (Lille), Joseph Yobo (Fenerbahce), Mike Williamson (Newcastle), Virgil van Dijk (FC Groningen), Bafetimbi Gomis (Lyon), Lex Immers (Feyenoord), Tom Ince (Blackpool), Oscar Cardozo (Benfica), Wes Morgan (Leicester), Nelson Oliveira (Benfica). Etienne Capoue (Toulouse)

What they'll end up with :

Their interest in Capoue is very real and would be a signigant sign of their ambition. However I just feel this player will stay at Toulouse or move to a bigger club so only time will tell. I think Parker and Bennett will be wise acquistions. Come late August with the squad looking a bit thread bare I see a few last minute loan moves and audacious bids being thrown in. Cardiff would be wise to strengthen now and avoid a last minute panic.

Predicted Starting VI

Marshall-Connolly-Turner-Hudson-Taylor-Gunnarson-Parker-Kim Bo Kyung-Mutch-Cornelius-Bellamy

Chelsea

Budget: £ 100 million

What's been said and done:

Chelsea have thus far made four signings, Schurrle (£18m, Bayer Leverkusen), Marco van Ginkel (£8m, Vitesse Arnhem), Mark Schwarzer (free, Fulham), Cristian Cuevas  and are heavily linked with Wayne Rooney. Mourinho has made his intentions clear publicly speaking of Rooney ever since taking over making all the right moves. He has said it's Rooney or bust but I wouldn't read too much into this, should the Rooney bid fail expect Chelsea to be on the lookout for another striker.
Rooney on holidays

What they need:

They need a striker simple as. Right now I believe they're strongest striker is Lukaku and I am a big fan however he has never lead a team on four fronts and that is a lot of pressure to put on his shoulders, a midfielder would be a great addition but not a neccesity. I can see a move for Daniele De Rossi or Sami Khedira.

Who are they linked with?
Hulk (Zenit Saint Petersburg), Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), Luka Modric, Mezut Ozil, Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Eliaquim Mangala (Porto), Nemanja Matic (Benfica), Burak Yilmaz (Galatasaray), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Geoffrey Kondogbia (Sevilla), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Stephan El Shaarawy (AC Milan), John Ruddy (Norwich), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Tiago Ilori (Sporting Lisbon), Didier Drogba (Galatasaray).

What they'll end up with :
I expect Chelsea to ship out a few more squad players on loan and maybe cut Torres/Ba loose. I think their persistence will reap rewards in the rather large round shape of Wayne Rooney. I can see Jose returning to Perez in Madrid asking for his favorite German Sami Khedira and if a fair fee can be agreed for both sides Sami will line out for Chelsea. Expect a big spend in January if everything not going Jose's way.

Predicted Starting VI
Cech-Ivanovic-Terry-Luiz-Cole-Ramires-Khedira-Oscar-Mata-Hazard-Rooney

Crystal Palace

Budget:£ 10-15 million

What's been said and done:

They have signed a young English striker so therefore he is....! Isn't great when we can finish each others sentences (overpriced incase you couldn't). At 6 million pounds I just don't see the value striking 6 goals in 20 appearances last season for Peterbrough. Thomas is a good signing with EPL experience and Campana looks promising. Palace will not be splashing money around as the hierarchy has made it clear they are looking to build a sustainable prudent model.

What they need:
They need a magic genie cause Ian Holloway's Championship team do not have a chance of staying in the premier league next season. Palace's owners say they would like to build on prudent financial management but they are better off looking at Southampton's model perhaps of spending a considerable amount of money on young upcoming quality players. There is value out there rather than looking at the likes of Carlton Cole and signing Dwight Gayle for 6 million pounds. Asides from fictional characters Palace need a new starting eleven. Aside's from Williams and Thomas I don't see players good enough to play at the top level.

Who are they linked with?
Matt Phillips, Tom Ince (Blackpool), Chris McCann (Burnley), Amido Balde (Guimaraes), Lucas Piazon (Chelsea), Peter Odemwingie (West Brom), Steven Reid (West Brom), Yohan Mollo (Nancy), Joe Walsh (Crawley), Sam Byram (Leeds), Luke Moore (Swansea), Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon), Jose Campana (Sevilla), Yannick Sagbo (Evian).

What they'll end up with :
They'll most likely get Carlton Cole and a few other journey men like former Arsenal man Quincy. Maybe bring in one or two on loan and you have yourself a side doomed for relegation and I actually like Palace (not Holloway though) and I hope I am proved wrong.

Missed Opportunities

Some of the world's best players to never grace the EPL

Thiago who chose Gaurdiola over United

The silly season is here and we all love it. Constant rumours, last minute gazumps and just pure nonsense surrounding footballer’s futures. PSG, Monaco, Manchester City and Real Madrid have all flexed their financial muscles with a total outlay of well over 300 million already and its only July.

For years the media has lapsed followers of the English Premier League into this sense of entitlement. All the best players want to come to England we thought. To a certain degree they may have been right but over the last few years the Spanish dominance, the ongoing growth of German football and the financial muscle of France/Russia has seen many players dismiss the EPL in favour of moves elsewhere.

So far this summer, Thiago had all but signed the contract to join United but ended up at Bayern Munching, Falcao to Chelsea was on the verge of completion when he decided he wanted to reside in the principality of Monaco and again the French League, this time in the form of PSG, signed big by brining in Edison Cavani pinching him from Man City.

This isn't the first time supposedly completed moves fell through, whether a player changed their mind or another team came in last minute or the board backed out or even in some scenarios an ash cloud meant the flight was abandoned, numerous players have came very close to gracing the premier league but never quite did. With this in mind I have compiled a list of deals that Oh so nearly transpired. In order to qualify the player’s move must have been on the brink of completion and the player must have gone on to make a significant contribution to the game post the broken down move so for this reason proposed moves like Rivaldo to Bolton and Cannavaro to QPR have been discounted.

 Zidane to Blackburn/Newcastle

Zizou joined Juventus
Zidane or Zizou quite famously almost joined Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn. Zidane was at the time applying his trade at Bordeaux and when Dalglish approach Jack Walker (Blackburn chairman), he infamously responded:"Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood” and so like that the transfer was nipped in the butt. To add insult to injury Zidane was offered to Newcastle at the beginning of the 1996 season for 1.2 million pounds, however he was not deemed worthy enough to play in England yet again. Three months later he signed for Juventus for 1.2 million and 2 years later he becomes a galactico at Real Madrid for the bargain price of 48 million pounds. As far as this one goes, have 2 clubs ever misjudged a player to this extent? Zidane would go on to win the World Cup with a man of the match performance in the final as well as a European Cup with France coupled with numerous club titles; 2 Serie A’s, a la Liga title and went on to score the winner in a Champions league final as well as coining his very own move, the Zizou Roulette and winning the Ballon D’or in 1998. Safe to say a ball was dropped here, more than once.

 Xavi to Manchester United
Xavi and his mentor
This is a transfer that mirrors United’s attempts to sign Thiago. Like Thiago, Xavi was a young Barcelona man struggling to get a break in the first team as ironically his mentor Gaurdiola (the man responsible for Thiago joining Bayern!) made the position his own! “I needed a change of scenery and things were not going well at Barcelona. I have always felt a real attachment to English football and United would be my club in England.”… United were very much in the hunt! Gaurdiola got injured, Xavi got his break in the side and became Mr.Barcalona landing title after title for club and country becoming one of the best players and passers the world has ever seen. As if Gaurdiola hasn’t been a thorn in United’s side enough getting injured he would then manage a Barcelona side led by Xavi and co to two triumphant Champions league victories over, you guessed it, Manchester United. What did Man United ever do to you Pep??

 KAKA to Manchester United/Manchester City
According to Sir Alex Ferguson, United attempted to raid the Milan youth system by bringing in Kaka and his brother Digao, they decided to stay at Milan and United accepted this, perhaps they should have pushed a little harder to sign the Brazilian playmaker as he would prove United’s downfall in the 06/07 champions league semi final scoring 10 goals throughout the campaign. Kaka became a World Cup winner claiming numerous individual titles. Fast forward to 2009 and yet again an offer came in from England. This time Manchester City who offered 100m pounds for Kaka, Kaka snubbed city saying he dreamt of one day being Milan captain. A few months later Kaka would join Real Madrid for €65 million and the he hasn’t been a shade of his former self since. As a result of his poor form Sir Alex would come in again for Kaka but Mourinho blocked any deal from happening as he preferred Kaka to move to Russia/China for a fear of him finding his form back at a European rival. Hopefully new Madrid boss Ancelotti will restore this mercurial genius back to the Kaka of old and the Kaka that was so widely coveted.

Ronaldhino to Manchester United/Manchester City
The idea to make this list was inspired by this Brazilian Samba genius, arguably the best player ever before the nightlife and booze caught up with him and even after 10 cocktails at the bar I bet he'd still have been the best technical player in England. So definite was Ronnie's move that French sources were said to be 99.9% sure the former PSG man would join Man United. So Manchester United fans who were already disgruntled at having lost Beckham to Madrid that summer were to be incensed when then Chief Executive Peter Kenyon lost out in a bidding war with Barcelona. The samba star joined the Catalan giants and after 2-world player of the years, a Champion’s league as well as 2 La Liga titles the fans of the premier league missed out on a great. Fast forward a few years and a few pounds later and yet again Ronnie turns down Manchester(City) for a move to the continent in the shape of AC Milan.
They could have been on opposite sides in the EPL

Samuel Eto'o to Bolton
Yes, I know, Bolton you say. When you hear Samuel Eto’o to Bolton you ask yourself two questions. Firstly is this the same Bolton that currently resides in the Championship and secondly is the same Eto’o that played for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and is currently one of the highest paid players in the world with Anzhi Makhachkala. Surprisingly, yes is the answer to both questions. Now lets set the record straight, Big Sam likes tooting his own horn but the story goes the deal had been agreed however the 6.5 million pound price proved a stumbling block for the Bolton hierarchy and the deal fell through. It is thought that Bolton’s attempts to sign Eto’o came in 2001 after he had joined Mallorca on a permanent deal following a successful loan spell from Real Madrid. Whilst Bolton look back with regret at the missed opportunity to sign the promising 20 year old, there is no doubt Eto’o doesn’t share the regret, he now has 3 champions league medals with Barcelona(2) and Inter Milan (1) as well as numerous league titles, something I suspect Bolton might not have been able to offer!

 Lewandowski-Blackburn/West Brom/Man City/Man United
Yet again forces more powerful than Big Sam (a considerable force it must have been) prevented this top coup coming to fruition. Lewandowski is an exception to this list in the fact he is young and could still end up at a Blackburn near you someday. So extraordinary is the story I ignored my own rules. Lewandowski was all set for a move to another Sam Allardyce team and had been seen in the home stand at a game against Everton. With a deal on the verge of completion, Mother Nature intervened or, to be precise, Iceland's Eyjafjallajofull volcano. Dortmund swooped in, nabbed their man, few Bundesliga titles later and Lewandowski is a year away from joining Germany's other ‘it’ club Bayern on a free who have beaten off competition from City and United. Three times a move to England for the big Pole has failed to materialise. Of all the teams he's been linked with no one has come as close as Big Sam's Blackburn and for a basement floor bargain of 4 million.

 Ibrahimovic-Arsenal
He went as far as sampling the kit

Is there a more consistently successful football player? If you want trophies you buy this man. In 2000, before Ibra’s big move to Ajax, he was extremely close to signing for the Gunners (and inevitably would have ended up at Man City therefore) , before such a deal could go ahead, Arsene insisted Ibra to join a trial training session with a view to signing him. Ibra who at the time was fairly unknown responded with an arrogant one-liner “Zlatan doesn’t do trials”. Zlatan’s infamous arrogance has since been justified going from club to club picking up titles and individual awards as if he’s Meryl Streep at the Oscars. His CV reads success. Over the last 11 seasons Ibra has won 10 European league titles for 6 difference clubs across 4 different leagues. The only blotches on his career is the missing Champion’s league medal which still could come at an ever improving PSG side and his apparent failure after his big money move to Barcelona. For 21 goals in 45 games and a La Liga title to be considered a failure just shows how unbelievable the rest of his career has been. For he is Zlatan and he does not do trials!
